  • Biographical Presentation

    Chladni studierte am Gymnasium illustre in Coburg und an der Universität Wittenberg, lehrte dort und in Leipzig, wo er 1742 außerordentlicher Professor für „Kirchenaltertümer“ wurde; 1744 zum Leiter des Gymnasiums in Coburg bestellt, wurde er 1747 als ordentlicher Professor für Theologie, Eloquenz und Dichtkunst nach Erlangen berufen, wo er auch den Doktortitel für Theologie erhielt. Seinen eigentlichen Fächern nach nicht Historiker, sondern Theologe, Philologe und Philosoph, machte er sich jedoch einen Namen durch seine philosophisch fundierte, pragmatisch-lehrhafte Geschichtstheorie, wobei er lutherische Orthodoxie mit dem Wolffschen Rationalismus und mit Empirismus zu verbinden suchte. Originell und über seine Zeit hinausweisend ist er mit seiner an die Geschichtsquellen anzulegenden hermeneutischen Methode. Gegen den historischen Pyrrhonismus auftretend, führte er den Begriff der „Sehepunkte“ ein, von denen aus nur relativ die historische Wirklichkeit erfaßt werden kann.
