  • Biographical Presentation

    B. studierte in Göttingen und Bonn insbesondere Geologie (Promotion 1885), war ab 1888 Assistent bei Oebbecke in Erlangen, wo er sich 1891 habilitierte. 1897-99 gehörte er als Paläontologe und Feldgeologe der Geological Survey of Egypt an. Als freiwilliger Mitarbeiter der Preußischen Geologischen Landesanstalt kartierte er eine große Zahl niederhessischer Meßtischblätter. 1905 wurde ihm der Professortitel verliehen, 1908 die türkische Liakat- und 1923 die Leibnizmedaille. Auf Grund zahlreicher Orientreisen 1888-1931 schrieb B. die erste gründliche Geologie von Ägypten und legte die Grundlagen zu einer modernen Stratigraphie von Syrien und Palästina.
