  • Biographical Presentation

    J. studierte in Marburg und Straßburg Geologie und Paläontologie und wurde 1901 in Straßburg bei E. W. Benecke zum Dr. phil. promoviert. Er war 1901-07 Assistent, 1907-50 Kustos und wurde 1912 zum Professor am Geologisch-Paläontologischen Institut der Univ. Berlin ernannt. 1909-12 leitete J. die von W. Branca, Berlin, organisierte Tendaguru-Expedition im damaligen Deutsch-Ostafrika (Tansania), die der Bergung oberjurassischer Riesensaurier galt. Die Präparation der Funde und ihre wissenschaftliche Bearbeitung dauerten mehrere Jahrzehnte und fanden 1961 mit J.s letzter Veröffentlichung ihren Abschluß. Seine durch große Sorgfalt und Zuverlässigkeit ausgezeichneten Publikationen haben viel zum Ansehen der deutschen Wirbeltierpaläontologie beigetragen. Ebenso hervorragend sind die unter J.s Leitung im Paläontologischen Museum der Humboldt-Universität aufgestellten Skelettrekonstruktionen der Riesensaurier (größte Art 12 m hoch und 22 m lang).|
