    Balser: Georg Friedrich Wilhelm B., geb. in Darmstadt 1. April 1780, † als großherz. hess. geh. Medicinalrath und Professor zu Gießen 5. Jan. 1846. Sein Vater war Physikus und Leibarzt zu Darmstadt. B. besuchte 1797 die Universität Gießen, bald darauf Jena und später Wien, wo er sich unter Beer und Schmid in der Augenheilkunde ausbildete. Im Herbst 1801 promovirte er in Gießen, und wurde praktischer Arzt in Darmstadt. 1804 erhielt er in Gießen die ordentliche Professur, und gründete dort eine ambulatorische Klinik. B. war ein glücklicher Arzt und Operateur, und war in weiten Kreisen als Augenarzt gesucht. Er besaß umfassende, allgemeine medicinische Kenntnisse, und eine außerordentlich liebenswürdige Persönlichkeit. (N. Nekrol. XXIV. [1846] S. 23.)
