    F. trat 1882 in den Jesuitenorden ein, studierte in Valkenburg (Holland) Philosophie und Theologie, später in Göttingen unter →G. E. Müller Psychologie. 1890-94 war er Gymnasiallehrer, 1899 erhielt er eine Professur für Philosophie in Valkenburg und spezialisierte sich unter dem Einfluß von Müller auf das Gebiet der experimentellen und philosophischen Psychologie. Das eigentliche Interesse lag für F. sowohl nach seiner Begabung für Mathematik und Physik wie auch nach der psychologischen Forschungsrichtung bei der naturwissenschaftlich orientierten Psychologie. Dabei bemühte er sich in seinen Vorlesungen und Veröffentlichungen um eine Synthese zwischen dem Ideengut aristotelisch-scholastischer Philosophie und moderner, besonders experimentell unterbauter Wissenschaft. Er galt eine Reihe von Jahren im In- und Auslande als einer der bedeutendsten Vertreter dieser Bestrebungen, speziell für den Bereich der Psychologie. Sein wichtigstes Werk ist das „Lehrbuch der experimentellen Psychologie“ (I 1916, 2/31932 [umgearbeitet], II 1929, ³1929 [umgearbeitet], spanisch ⁴Madrid 1950).
