  • Biographical Presentation

    Aus ärmlichen Verhältnissen stammend, war B. zunächst Bratschist und erhielt bei H. Ritter in Würzburg seine musikalische Ausbildung. Darauf war er als Dirigent in verschiedenen deutschen Städten, so besonders in Hamburg, Lübeck, Breslau und Karlsruhe tätig. Enge Beziehungen zu Bayreuth, wo er 1896 Assistent wurde, bildeten ihn zum vorzüglichen Wagnerdirigenten. 1906-14 leitete er dort die Parsifal-Aufführungen. 1912 wurde B. Nachfolger von H. Richter als Leiter des Hallé-Orchesters in Manchester. 1919 wurde er Generalmusikdirektor des Landestheaters Darmstadt. Bedeutsam sind auch seine Verdienste um die Wagnerpflege in England, Spanien und Australien (u. a. gründete er das Konservatorium in Nelson, Neuseeland).
