  • Biographical Presentation

    Nach Assistentenjahren, Teilnahme als Arzt an den Feldzügen 1866 und 1870/71, Habilitation und Tätigkeit in der Berliner Poliklinik war E. 1873-82 ordentlicher Professor der Pharmakologie in Greifswald. Er gab die Professur auf, um sich in Berlin intensiver der „Realenzyklopädie der gesamten Heilkunde“ (15 Bände, 1880-83, ⁴1907-14) widmen zu können, die ein heute noch wertvolles Spiegelbild vom damaligen Stande dieser Wissenschaft gibt. In Berlin errichtete er eine Poliklinik für Nervenkranke und wurde außerordentlicher Professor der Nervenheilkunde an der Universität. E. beschäftigte sich besonders mit der Physiologie der Nervenkrankheiten und der ärztlichen Sexualwissenschaft. – GMR.
