  • Biographical Presentation

    B. war 1842-46 Schüler des Städelschen Kunstinstitutes in Frankfurt unter J. Becker und Ph. Veit. 1846-48 war er als selbständiger Maler in München tätig, hierauf bis 1855 wieder in seiner Vaterstadt. 1858 nahm er seinen dauernden Wohnsitz in Kronberg, das er nur zu Reisen nach Frankreich, Belgien, Holland und Italien verließ. B. war der Begründer und das Haupt der Kronberger Malerkolonie, die in Anlehnung an die „Schule von Barbizon“ einen besonders malerischen Stil pflegte, der sich durch eine weiche, blasse Tonigkeit und beinahe verschwommene Formgebung auszeichnete. Er erhielt verschiedene internationale Preise (unter anderem 1869 die große Goldene Medaille in München) und 1894 den Titel Professor.
