  • Biographical Presentation

    B. studierte an der Polytechnischen Schule Augsburg, in Erlangen (Promotion 1842), Wien und Berlin (bei →P. G. Lejeune-Dirichlet). 1842-43 in Paris fühlte er sich vor allem von den Vorlesungen J. Liouvilles angezogen. 1845-55 war B. Erzieher im Hause des rumänischen Fürsten Ghika, 1857 habilitierte er sich nach kurzem Aufenthalt in England an der Universität München, wo er 1865-1905 zunächst als außerordentlicher, dann als ordentlicher Professor tätig war. Er gehörte der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften seit 1871 an. - B.s Arbeiten betrafen Kugelfunktionen, Kettenbrüche, Algebra und vorzüglich Geometrie. Auf eine B.sche Kettenbruchumwandlung stützte →O. Perron 1952 seine Beweise für einige der merkwürdigen Formeln, welche der Inder Ch. V. Raman ohne Begründung hinterlassen hat.
