  • Biographical Presentation

    A. begann als 13jähriger vielversprechend mit einem Selbstporträt. Er besuchte schon früh die Wiener Akademie und ging 1855 nach Düsseldorf, anschließend nach München und lebte seit 1862 in Wien. 1870-72 und 1906-10 wirkte er als Vorstand der Wiener Künstlergenossenschaft, 1877 erhielt A. eine Professur für Porträtmalerei an der Wiener Akademie, ohne zu ständiger Lehrtätigkeit verpflichtet zu sein. In seiner Jugend mehr dem historischen Genregemälde zugewandt, errang A. hohes Ansehen als Porträtmaler der Wiener Aristokratie und Finanzwelt, besonders aber der Fürstenhöfe in Wien, Berlin, London und St. Petersburg.
