  • Biographical Presentation

    A. studierte in Braunschweig und Leipzig Naturwissenschaften, besonders Geologie, war 1859-63 als Hüttenmann in Böhmen tätig und kam dort im Kampf der Nationalitäten zum Verständnis des Wesens beider und zu seinem späteren entschiedenen Eintreten für sein Volkstum. In Leipzig wandte er sich späterhin der Geographie und der neu aufstrebenden Völkerkunde zu. Er war Mitbegründer und 1873-90 Leiter der kartographischen Anstalt von Velhagen und Klasing in Leipzig, wo er 1877 mit O. Peschel einen physikalisch-statistischen Atlas des Deutschen Reiches veröffentlichte, auch Schulatlanten und den „Allgemeinen Handatlas“ (1881), der, in 6. Auflage 1914 von Ambrosius herausgegeben, mit 127 ½ Blättern das umfangreichste deutsche Kartenwerk darstellte. A. wirkte seit 1890 in Heidelberg, wo er 1891-1903 den „Globus“ herausgab, und 1904 bis 1912 in München.
