  • Biographical Presentation

    B.s Berufung als Maschineningenieur der Zentralleitung der Gotthardbahn in Zürich (1875) brachte ihm die Aufgabe, in Airolo die unzulänglichen Ferroux-Perkussions-Gesteinsbohrmaschinen zu studieren und möglichst zu verbessern. Seine Konstruktion einer hydraulischen Drehbohrmaschine hat die Durchführung großer Tunnelbauten entscheidend beeinflußt und wurde vielfach benutzt, so beim Bau des Sonnensteintunnels (Gmunden-Ebensee), des Pfaffensprungtunnels der Gotthardbahn und des Arlbergtunnels. 1876 entwarf B. den Bauplan für den Simplontunnel. 1883 wurde er nach Spanien berufen, wo er (bis 1895) große Querschlagbetriebe zum Aufsuchen von Erzgängen ausführte. Ab 1893 leitete er in Brig - sein Studienfreund und Teilhaber →Karl Brandau (1849–1917) auf italienischer Seite in Iselle - den Bau des Simplontunnels, dessen Ausführung seiner 1878 in Hamburg gegründeten Firma „B., Brandau & Co.“ übertragen worden war und 1899-1905 unter der Verantwortung Brandaus vollendet wurde.
