  • Biographical Presentation

    L. studierte nach dem Besuch des Berliner Wilhelms-Gymnasiums zunächst an der Berliner Bauakademie, wechselte jedoch nach einigen Semestern an die Berliner Universität über, um Astronomie zu studieren. Er promovierte 1878 mit der Arbeit „Zur Theorie der Sternschnuppen“ und habilitierte sich 1881 zum Privatdozenten, seine Ernennung zum ao. Professor erfolgte 1891 und die zum o. Honorar-Professor für Astronomie und Mathematik 1909. Als Hochschullehrer wirkte er – abgesehen von astronomischen Vorlesungen – vor allem auf dem Gebiet der Einführung in die höhere Mathematik. Daneben lehrte er über 3 Jahrzehnte auch Mathematik an der Kriegsakademie. Mehrere seiner astronomischen Arbeiten sind für die Entwicklung der Astronomie von Bedeutung gewesen; dies gilt insbesondere für seine Methoden zur Bestimmung von Meteorbahnen und zur Bahnbestimmung spektroskopischer Doppelsterne. Letztere ist bis heute die meistverwendete Methode zur Lösung der Aufgabe. Er schrieb außerdem Arbeiten über prinzipielle Probleme der Himmelsmechanik, über die Bahnen von Kometen und über Fehlertheorie. Seit 1891 bekleidete er ununterbrochen bis zu seinem Tode das Amt eines der beiden Schriftführer der „Astronomischen Gesellschaft“ (AG) und gab in dieser Eigenschaft die „Vierteljahrsschrift“ der AG heraus.
