Biographical Presentation
B. studierte zunächst bei seinem Vater, dann bei den bedeutendsten Cello-Virtuosen der Zeit: F. Grützmacher, A. Piatti, J. de Swert u. a. Lange Zeit wirkte er im Orchester des Nationaltheaters in Mannheim, später gehörte er zu den gesuchtesten Virtuosen auf seinem Instrument. Er galt als bester Interpret zeitgenössischer Werke für Cello (Brahms, Dvořák, Reger, d'Albert, Strauß, Pfitzner). 1884-86 konzertierte er mit K. Flesch (Violine) und K. Friedberg (Klavier). Als Lehrer hatte er bedeutende Schüler, u. a. E.|Mainardi und R. Metzmacher (1887 Hochsches Konservatorium, Frankfurt; 1909 Hochschule Berlin; 1892 Professor; Mitglied der Stockholmer Akademie). Sein Spiel war männlich-kraftvoll und ohne äußerliche virtuose Effekte. Mit seiner Cello-Schule, die er zusammen mit dem Arzt D. Rynar verfaßte, bildete B. eine neue Methode des Cellospiels auf physiologischer Grundlage aus, die von der mechanisch-virtuosen Haltung der bisherigen Lehrwerke völlig abwich und von bleibender Bedeutung sein wird.
