    G. studierte Philosophie, Kunstgeschichte und romanische Sprachen an den Universitäten Berlin, München, Freiburg im Breisgau. Er promovierte in Berlin bei F. Harms mit einer Dissertation über „Hobbes und Spinoza“. 1873/75 reiste er in Frankreich, Spanien und Portugal, weilte längere Zeit in Neapel, wo er von dem Literarhistoriker De Sanctis einen nachhaltigen Eindruck empfing. 1875 setzte er seine Studien, nunmehr ganz der Romanistik zugetan, unter der Leitung Adolf Toblers fort. 1878 wurde er zum Lektor der italienischen Sprache an der Universität Berlin ernannt. 1878 habilitierte er sich mit der wegweisenden Studie über die „Sizilianische Dichterschule des 13. Jahrhunderts“, die auch in italienischer Übersetzung erschien (übersetzt durch S. Friedmann, Livorno 1882). 1880 wurde G. als außerordentlicher Professor für romanische Philologie nach Breslau berufen und rückte 1883 zum Ordinarius auf. Einen Ruf nach Göttingen 1891 nahm er zwar an, doch hinderte ihn Krankheit daran, den neuen Lehrstuhl einzunehmen. - Sein Hauptwerk die „Geschichte der italienischen Literatur“ (2 Bände, 1884/88) blieb unvollendet. Obwohl nur bis zur Mitte des 16. Jahrhundert reichend, ist es heute noch ein klassisches Werk. Es fand in Italien höchste Anerkennung; bedeutende Literarhistoriker besorgten die Übersetzung ins Italienische (N. Zingarelli Band I, Turin 1887, ²1914; V. Rossi Band II, ebenda 1891, ²1902)|.
