Biographical Presentation
Augustin: Christian A. ab Hortis, geb. 6 Dec. 1598 in Zips in Ungarn (nach Andern in Käsmack), studirte Medicin und erhielt 1619 zu Basel die Doctorwürde. Anfangs in Käsmack prakticirend, ging er später als Leibarzt des Kaisers Ferdinand II. nach Wien und † 21. Aug. 1650 zu Groß-Lomnitz. Wegen seiner dem Pflanzengarten gewidmeten Sorgfalt wurde er vom|Kaiser mit dem Zusatze ab Hortis in den ungarischen Adelsstand erhoben. Dieser nicht von A. gegründete Garten war wahrscheinlich der um 1542 entstandene sogenannte „Paradiesgarten“ (auf dem heutigen Josephsplatz und einem Theil des Burg- und Michaeler-Platzes. Er machte die Destillation eines Polychrest-Oels bekannt. — Sein Urgroßenkel war Samuel Augustin ab Hortis, geb. 26. Aug. 1729 auf dem Familienlandgute Groß-Lomnitz. Er war erst Subrector in Käsmack und † 5. Aug. 1792 in Georgenberg in Ungarn als Prediger. Er schrieb über algebraische Gleichungen und mineralogische Aufsätze. (Adelung; Poggendorff, Biogr.-litt.
