  • Biographical Presentation

    Die V. erscheinen in St. Gallen 1373 als Vonbol, seit dem frühen 16. Jh. als V. Um diese Zeit teilte sich die Familie in drei Linien. Zur ersten gehörte →Ulrich (1735–1808), Gründer des bedeutenden St. Galler Textilhandelshauses „Union AG“. Aus der zweiten Linie stammten →Johann Niklaus (1783–1854), Gründer der Bank V. in Mailand und der Textilwerke V. in Haslach an der Mühl (Oberösterr.). Sein Sohn →August Oskar (1822–88), Schweizer Generalkonsul in Mailand, führte beides fort; der Enkel →Johann Heinrich (1854–1913) konzentrierte sich auf die Werke in Haslach. Zu einem Zweig der zweiten Linie gehörte der|Mediziner →Paul (1885–1965) aus St. Gallen, Anatom, Prosektor in Würzburg und Zürich, Professor für Physiologie in Moskau.

    Die dritte Linie, →Davids (1794–1856) Vorfahren, stellte durch mehrere Generationen die Feiltrager, die als städtische Kommissionäre Garn und Leinwand verkauften. Dieses Amt verschwand beim Niedergang der Leinenproduktion Ende des 18. Jh.
