  • Biographical Presentation

    Nach Studium in Greifswald und Halle übte A. seit 1861 die ärztliche Praxis aus, nahm teil an den Feldzügen 1864, 1866 und 1870-71; dazwischen habilitierte er sich und wurde 1867 Leiter der Irren-Heil- und Pflege-Anstalt in Greifswald und 1873 außerordentlicher Professor für Psychiatrie. - A. unternahm den Versuch, der Psychiatrie eine naturwissenschaftliche Grundlage zu geben. Er erblickte diese in seinem für die Forschung wichtig gewordenen biologischen Grundgesetz, gefunden in Anlehnung an das Zuckungsgesetz des ermüdenden und absterbenden Nerven, das er zum Verlaufsschema der Psychosen machte. Dabei hielt er sich auch an die Lehren der Psychiater →Wilhelm Griesinger, Karl Ludwig Kahlbaum, Heinrich Neumann und →Ernst Albert von Zeller. A. vertrat monistische Anschauungen, unterschied aber zwischen Seele (Psyche) und Geist.
