  • Biographical Presentation

    Wevel: Gillis de W., altflamischer Legendendichter. Als junger Klostergeistlicher vollendete er im J. 1367 ein Leben des h. Amandus in Verbindung mit dem des h. Bavo, von denen der erstere der Schutzheilige Flanderns, der andere der von Gent war. Er benutzte dabei u. a. die von Utenbroeke verfaßte II. Partie des Spieghel historiael, z. Th. fast wörtlich; seine eigene mühsame Arbeit hat nur geringen poetischen Werth. Ueber 12 000 Verse in kurzen Reimpaaren umfaßt das Leven van Sente Amand, welches Ph. Blommaert für die Maatschappy der vlaamsche Bibliophilen, Gent 1842—1843, herausgegeben hat.
