  • Biographical Presentation

    1886 Privatdozent in Königsberg, war A. seit 1892 ordentlicher Professor an der Universität Breslau. Als Schüler Adolf Toblers bekam er ein ausgesprochenes Interesse für metrische Fragen und die Liebe zur italienischen Literatur mit auf den Weg. Seine Vorliebe galt der provenzalischen Dichtung. Er war in erster Linie Textkritiker. Seine Ausgaben der Troubadours Peire Rogier (1882) und Bernart de Ventadorn (1915), sowie des Trouvère Guy de Cambrai (1907), haben noch besonderen Wert durch die in den Einleitungen enthaltenen Ausführungen zur Metrik. Seine „Provenzalische Chrestomathie“ (mit wertvoller Übersicht über die Formenlehre) erlebte 6 Auflagen (⁶1932). Grundlegend sind seine Studien „Zur Formenlehre des provenzalischen Minnesangs“ (in: Zeitschrift für romanische Philologie 53, 1933) und über Bertram de Born (1931). Auf dem Gebiet des Italienischen befaßte er sich vor allem mit Petrarca; verschiedene Studien galten dessen Canzoniere (u. a.: Zur Entwicklung der italienischen Dichtung Petrarcas, 1891) und dessen Trionfi (kritische Ausgabe, 1901).
