Engau: Johann Rudolf E., Rechtsgelehrter, geb. 28. April 1708 zu Erfurt, † 18. Januar 1755 in Jena. Er studirte seit 1726 in Jena und ward daselbst 1734 Doctor der Rechte, 1738 außerordentlicher, 1740 ordentlicher Professor und Beisitzer des Schöffenstuhls, 1743 Professor der Institutionen und Beisitzer des Landgerichts, 1746 Senior der Juristenfacultät, 1748 Hofrath. Von seinen Schriften sind die Compendien des deutschen Privatrechts, des Criminal- und des Kirchenrechts hervorzuheben: „Elementa iuris Germanici civilis“, 1736, 4. Ausg. 1752, wozu Chr. G. Riccius ein „Spicilegium“ schrieb; „Elementa iuris criminalis Germanico-Carolini“, 1738, 7. Ausg. mit Anmerkungen von J. A. Hellfeld, 1777; „Elementa iuris canonico-pontificio-ecclesiastici“, 1739, 5. Ausg. von J. E. Schmidt, 1765. Seine „Decisiones et responsa iuris selecta“ gab P. W. Schmid, 1761, heraus.
