  • Biographical Presentation

    B. nahm als Universitätsstudent Musikunterricht bei Alexander Müller in Zürich und wandte sich dann ganz der Musik zu (1842 Klavierlehrer in St. Gallen). Im Winter 1844 auf 1845 genoß er noch Unterricht bei W. Taubert in Berlin. Alsdann wirkte er als angesehener Lehrer und Chordirigent in Zürich (1859 Musikdirektor der Universität). Er war befreundet mit Richard Wagner, Jakob Burckhardt und besonders mit Gottfried Keller. - B.s volksliedhaft-sentimentale Vokalwerke waren einst überaus populär („Noch sind die Tage der Rosen …“, op. 24, 1).
