  • Biographical Presentation

    Das in Göttingen 1867 begonnene Studium der Mathematik beendete F. 1870 in Berlin. Seit 1871 lehrte er an der Sophienschule. 1874 wurde er als außerordentlicher Professor an die Universität Berlin, 1875 als ordentlicher Professor an das Polytechnikum in Zürich und 1892 wieder an die Universität Berlin berufen. – F. mathematisches Wirken fällt in die Zeit, in welcher die Gruppentheorie, ursprünglich aus der Anwendung auf die Gleichungstheorie kommend, sich zu einer selbständigen Disziplin entwickelte. Zur Arithmetisierung, die typisch für die Berliner mathematische Schule (Kronecker, Kummer und F.) war, lieferte F. einen für die folgende Entwicklung richtungweisenden Beitrag, indem er (mit I. Schur) eine Theorie der endlichen Gruppen linearer Substitutionen für n Variable entwarf. Die Theorie der Darstellung von Gruppen durch Substitutionen ist zu einem der wichtigsten und am weitesten entwickelten Gebiete der Gruppentheorie geworden. Von besonderer Bedeutung ist der von F. 1896-99 eingeführte Algorithmus der Gruppencharaktere, den er – wie auch andere Mathematiker – mit Erfolg auf verschiedene schwierige Probleme aus der Theorie der endlichen Gruppen angewandt hat. In der Quantenmechanik fand dieser F.sche Algorithmus auf Permutationsgruppen, wie sie in der Physik benötigt werden, Anwendung.
