  • Biographical Presentation

    E., der lange nur als Sonnenuhren- und Kompaßmacher bekannte Nürnberger Meister, Astronom, Lehrer im Schreib- und Rechenamt und Arzt, hat als Kartograph epochemachende Werke geschaffen. In seiner „Karte des Romwegs“ (nach 1492 und vor 1501) und seiner Landstraßenkarte von Mitteleuropa (1501) faßte er die Idee der Straßenkarte, die im Mittelalter keine Vorgängerin hat. Die Karten sind gesüdet, verleugnen zwar die Beziehung zu Ptolemäus nicht ganz, sind aber doch vor allem auf Grund von Messungen von Kompaßwinkeln und erfahrungsgemäß gewonnenen Ortsdistanzen konstruiert. Die Verwendung von Meilenpunkten ermöglichte es ihm, Straßenführung und Entfernung jeweils durch eine kombinierte Angabe mitzuteilen, wobei er erstaunliche Genauigkeiten erreichte.
