  • Biographical Presentation

    B. studierte in Bonn bei Otto Jahn, lehrte einige Jahre in Breslau und Königsberg als Dozent und außerordentlicher Professor und folgte 1877 einem Ruf als Ordinarius nach Zürich. Neben seinen griechischen und römischen Privataltertümern und textkritischen Beiträgen zu Petron, Apuleius, Plutarch und Lukian ist B. vor allem durch die „Technologie und Terminologie der Gewerbe und Künste bei Griechen und Römern“ (4 Bände, 1874–87, Neubearbeitung des 1. Bands, 1912) bekannt geworden. Mit feinem Gefühl für die künstlerischen Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten in der Sprache begabt, schrieb er nicht nur Studien zur Metapher in den klassischen Sprachen, sondern wandte diese Betrachtungsweise auch auf die Sprache →Bismarcks an.
