    S Samuel Apiarius (s. 2), →Siegfried Apiarius († 1565?), Drucker und Formschneider (ab 1560 selbständig).

  • Biographical Presentation

    A. war zuerst Buchbinder in Nürnberg, dann ab 1525 in Basel, wo er wohl auch als nicht selbständiger Drucker tätig war. Ab 1533 stellte er zu Straßburg mit Peter Schöffer dem Jüngeren mehrere Musikdrucke her. Am 19.1.1537 siedelte er, vom Rat der Stadt berufen, nach Bern über und führte dort den Buchdruck ein. Hier setzte er seine Tätigkeit als Musikdrucker fort, ohne freilich die Druckkunst Schöffers völlig festzuhalten, und lieferte u. a. theologische Literatur für das protestantische Oberdeutschland.

  • Biographical Presentation

    Apiarius: Matthias A. (Bienenvater), erster Buchdrucker der Stadt Bern, wo er sich zur Zeit der Einführung der Reformation niederließ. Obgleich sein Name sich auf Druckschriften erst im Jahre 1530 findet, wird ihm doch schon der Druck von Nicolaus Manuel's „Todtentanz“ (1525) zugeschrieben, auch soll er noch die „Biblia hispanica“ (1569), die sogenannte Bärenbibel gedruckt haben. 1533—36 druckte er zu Straßburg (Panzer, Ann. typ. XI. 265).

      Korrektur: Ueber Math. Apiarius (= Biener, nicht Bienenvater) vgl. Rettig im Archiv f. Gesch. des D. Buchhandels IV. (1879) S. 29 ff. Er druckte, von 1530—33 für eigene Rechnung, dann mit Peter Schöffer, in Straßburg, bis er 1537 nach Bern berufen|ward. Gestorben scheint er 1554, da mit diesem Jahr statt seiner Firma diejenige seines Sohnes Samuel A. auftritt. Sein anderer Sohn, Siegfr. A., erscheint als Xylograph und Buchbinder.
