  • Biographical Presentation

    Nach Studium an den Universitäten Heidelberg und Erlangen war H. 1867-97 als Gymnasialprofessor tätig. 1885 wurde er außerordentlicher Professor an der Universität Freiburg, die ihn 1890 zum Honorarprofessor, 1908 zum ordentlichen Honorarprofessor für Sanskrit und vergleichende Sprachwissenschaft ernannte. Vom Vorbild des Onkels →Adolf Holtzmann, der die wichtigsten Teile der indischen Epen nachgedichtet hatte, wurde H. zu einer intensiven Beschäftigung mit dem Sanskrit-Epos Mahābhārata angeregt. Seine materialreiche Untersuchung darüber gehört trotz umstrittener Hypothesen zu den frühen Standardwerken der altindischen Eposforschung.
