  • Biographical Presentation

    A. besuchte das Kreuz-Gymnasium in Dresden und studierte in Leipzig und München, wo er 1887 promovierte. Seit 1894 Privatgelehrter, führte er die von seinem Lehrer H. Brunn begründeten Denkmälerpublikationen antiker Plastik weiter und baute sie mit dem Ziel eines „Corpus statuarum“ aus, bildete Sammlungen antiker Plastik und Kleinkunst, die dann in Museen (Tübingen, Amsterdam, New Haven, Budapest) übergingen. Besonderes verdanken ihm die Antikensammlungen in München und Kopenhagen. Mit sicherem Blick für künstlerische Qualität verband A. eine auf ausgedehnten Reisen erworbene intime Monumentenkenntnis. Seine wissenschaftlichen Leistungen liegen vor allem auf dem Gebiet der griechischen Plastik und des antiken Porträts. Nach A. Furtwänglers Tod war er der erste Kenner antiker Glyptik, von der er eine bedeutende Sammlung besaß.
