  • Biographical Presentation

    B. studierte 1883-87 in Berlin Architektur und zugleich bei →A. Erman Ägyptologie. Er war 1887-88 am Ägyptischen Museum Berlin, 1895/96 als deutscher Teilnehmer an der Denkmäler-Aufnahme auf der Insel Philae. Er veranlaßte und leitete 1897-99 den Generalkatalog des Ägyptischen Museums in Kairo, wurde 1898 Mitglied des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts, 1899 wissenschaftlicher Attaché am Deutschen Generalkonsulat in Kairo und war 1907-28 Direktor des Deutschen Instituts für ägyptische Altertumskunde in Kairo. B. bearbeitete als erster die Kahun-Papyri und legte aus ihnen das Mittlere Reich zeitlich fest; er hat viele chronologische Arbeiten folgen lassen. Auf Grund seines Doppelstudiums ist er Begründer der Bauforschung in Ägypten geworden und hat einen hohen Standard für Ausgrabungen und deren Veröffentlichung eingeführt. Seine wichtigsten Ausgrabungen sind: Sonnenheiligtum des Ne-user-Rê (1898–1901 für das Ägyptische Museum Berlin), Totentempel der Pyramiden von Abusir und Stadt Tell el Amarna (1901–14 für die Deutsche Orientgesellschaft [James Simon]). B. machte umfassende Pyramiden-Untersuchungen. Er gründete 1931 sein Institut für ägyptische Bauforschung und Altertumskunde in Kairo. -Dr. phil. h. c., Dr.-Ing. e. h.
