    B. besuchte das Gymnasium in Bonn, das Owens College in Manchester und das City a Guilds of London Institut, studierte Chemie in Bonn, Göttingen und Leipzig und promovierte 1893 bei →Otto Wallach. 1894-97 war er als Chemiker in der Kattunfabrik Rolffs u. Co., Siegfeld, und bei S. Schwabe u. Co., Manchester, tätig; 1899 wurde er Privatdozent für technische Chemie in Bonn, 1906 ordentlicher Professor an der Handelshochschule Berlin; 1918-21 war er Leiter der chemischen Abteilung des Speyer-Hauses Frankfurt/Main und las dann bis 1935 an der Landwirtschaftlichen Hochschule Berlin. B. war 1922-33 Hauptschriftleiter der „Zeitschrift für angewandte Chemie“, 1931-33 Vizepräsident der Deutschen Chemischen Gesellschaft, Ehrenmitglied der American Urological Association; Dr. ing. h. c. Karlsruhe 1929. - B. ist von den Grenzen der anorganischen über die organische Chemie ins Reich der Medizin vorgedrungen: Die Sulfoxylverbindungen, die Arbeiten auf dem Gebiete des Indigos und des Salvarsans, die zum Neosalvarsan und Neosilbersalvarsan geführt haben, die Jod-Arsen-Antimon- und Selen-Verbindungen, durch die B. den Schatz der Heilmittel bereichert und neue Wege zur Erkennung innerer Krankheiten, namentlich solcher der Harnwege (Selectan, Uroselectan), gezeigt hat.
