  • Biographical Presentation

    B. studierte in Heidelberg Rechtswissenschaft. 1875 Amtmann in Baden-Baden, wirkte er seit 1889 als Oberamtmann in Rastatt. 1891 zum Oberbürgermeister Mannheims berufen, erhob er diese Stadt zur Großstadt. Seiner Tatkraft verdankt Mannheim Industrie- und Rheinauhafen und die Ansiedlung bedeutender Industrieunternehmen. Zahlreiche Eingemeindungen erweiterten das Stadtgebiet. B. förderte die Reform der Realschulen und das kaufmännische Bildungswesen; die Handelshochschule (heute Wirtschaftshochschule) entstand. Das System der Mannheimer Volksschule erlangte durch seinen Mitarbeiter Anton Sickinger Weltruf. Rosengarten und Kunsthalle ragen unter B.s kulturellen Schöpfungen hervor.
