    Nach der Reifeprüfung in Wien studierte P. an der dortigen Universität, wo sie 1936 am Institut für Orientalistik mit einer Dissertation über Rollsiegel der Akkad-Zeit promoviert wurde. Da sie zur Teilnahme an den Grabungen von Hetty Goldman in Tarsus kein Visum für die Türkei erhielt, emigrierte sie mit ihrer Schwester Hildegard über Frankreich nach New York. 1938 erschienen zwei erste Artikel zur vorderasiat. Glyptik (Die Siegel aus d. Slg. d. Franziskanerklosters Flagellatio in Jerusalem, in: Berytus V, S. 1-26; Treize cylindres-sceaux de la collection Hahn, in: Revue d'Assyriologie 35, S. 187-95). 1940-42 erhielt P. in New York ein Forschungsstipendium, anschließend weitere Research Fellowships der American Philosophical Society, der American Schools of Oriental Research sowie der Bollingen und der Guggenheim Foundation. 1944 wurde ihr die amerik. Staatsbürgerschaft erteilt. In ihrer Monographie „The Great King of Assyria“ (1945, mit Susan Hare) behandelte sie die neuassyr. Wandreliefs des 9. Jh. v. Chr. im Metropolitan Museum in New York. Anschließend widmete sie sich erneut der Glyptik und bearbeitete eine große Gruppe der Siegelabdrücke aus Nuzi (Seal Impressions of Nuzi, The Annual of the American Schools of Oriental Research 24, 1947). 1948 publizierte P. in der Reihe „Corpus of Ancient Near Eastern Seals in North American Collections“ als ersten Band „The Collection of the Pierpont Morgan Library“ (2 Bde., 1948, mit Briggs Buchanan). Dieses Standardwerk der vorderasiat. Glyptik, das erstmals eine der größten Siegelsammlungen der Welt erschließt, bildet die Grundlage für weitere Studien auf diesem Spezialgebiet.

    1950-58 war P. als Assistant Professor für allgemeine Kunstgeschichte am Queens College in New York. Nach 1955 besuchte P. jeden Sommer das Familiengut in Niederösterreich, wohin sie gelegentlich Kollegen zum wissenschaftlichen Austausch einlud. Seit 1958 lehrte sie als Assistant Professor of Archaeology am Department of Fine Arts and Archaeology der Columbia Univ., New York und konzentrierte sich nunmehr auf die antike Kunstgeschichte des Vorderen Orients. Seit 1962 war sie Associate Professor und seit 1964 Arthur Lehman Professor of Art History and Archaeology an der Columbia Univ., New York. Für die antike Kunstgeschichte des Vorderen Orients galt sie bereits als international anerkannte Gelehrte, als 1963 in der Reihe „Kunst der Welt“ ihr Band: „Alt Iran, die Kunst in vorislam. Zeit“ (³1980, engl. 1965, franz. 1982) erschien.|
