  • Biographical Presentation

    P. studierte Astronomie in Göttingen, wo er 1909 mit einer Arbeit über die Wahrscheinlichkeit von Sternverteilungen promoviert wurde. Nach dem 1. Weltkrieg wurde er 1923 zum Observator am Einstein-Turm in Potsdam ernannt. Nach dem 2. Weltkrieg übte er eine Professur an der Univ. Basel aus. Seine Arbeiten betrafen überwiegend das System der Fixsterne. Die von ihm und →Erwin Freundlich (1885–1964) entwickelte dynamische Deutung des K-Effekts der B-Sterne unterstellte im Milchstraßensystem im Gegensatz zu den von Henricus Jan Oort angenommenen Kreisbahnen elliptische Bahnen; sie wurde nicht widerlegt. Großen Einfluß auf die Entwicklung der Stellarastronomie hatten die von P. verfaßten Lehrbücher über die Statistik und die Dynamik der Sternsystenie, die mehrere Jahrzehnte maßgeblich waren.
