  • Biographical Presentation

    C. bereiste 1885, 1888 und die folgenden Jahre die ostafrikanische und Somaliküste. Er war 1894/95 zusammen mit Dr. Gruner und dem Arzt Dr. Döring einer der Führer der deutschen Togo-Expedition, die für die Erschließung des Hinterlandes von größter Bedeutung war, und wurde der Gründer der Forschungsstation Sansane-Mangu. 1896 kam er als Stationschef nach Jaunde in Kamerun, von wo aus er als erster in die bis dahin gänzlich unbekannte Südostecke der Kolonie vordrang und den Dscha entdeckte. Er nahm teil an den großen Expeditionen von von Kamptz und Pavel, warf einen gefährlichen Aufstand der Maka nieder und trug viel zur Durchsetzung und Anerkennung der deutschen Herrschaft bei.
