    C. war seit dem 8.9.1587 in Heidelberg als Theologe immatrikuliert, wo er fünf Jahre studierte und wahrscheinlich anschließend neun Jahre als Lektor tätig war. Durch die Beschäftigung mit den Kirchenvätern, besonders mit Cyprian und Augustinus, kam er der katholischen Lehre näher. Im Mai 1601 nahm er Verbindung mit Kardinal Baronius und Papst Clemens VIII. auf. Kurz darauf trat er in Mainz zur katholischen Kirche über. Vom Papst eingeladen, reiste er im Mai 1602 nach Rom, war dort Gast des Baronius und empfing am 1.9.1602 mit seinem Bruder Johann Heinrich aus der Hand des Papstes das Sakrament der Firmung. Von da ab nannte er sich nach seinem Gönner Baronius. Auf der Rückreise wurde er Doktor der Universitäten Perugia (26.9.1602) und Siena (30.9.). In Mainz bekleidete er die Stelle eines Assessors und seit 1605 des Direktors des geistlichen Konsistoriums. In mehreren Schriften trat er für die katholische Lehre ein und rechtfertigte seine Konversion, deren Echtheit nicht zu bezweifeln ist. Die Erwartungen, die seine hohen Gönner an seine literarische Tätigkeit geknüpft hatten, hat er wohl nicht erfüllt.
