  • Biographical Presentation

    A. studierte klassische Philologie, Deutsch und Geschichte in Bonn, Leipzig und Berlin; er promovierte 1873 in Leipzig bei →G. Curtius. Seit 1895 war er Direktor des Gymnasiums in Burg bei Magdeburg, seit 1900 in Marburg. - Stärker als in der Wissenschaft (Untersuchungen zum 8. Buch der Naturgeschichte des Plinius, Biographie Ciceros und des Horaz) wirkte A. auf dem Gebiet der Schulpolitik. U. a. nahm er erfolgreich am Kampf um die Neugestaltung des preußischen Gymnasialunterrichts teil (z. T. in Auseinandersetzung mit dem von U. von Wilamowitz-Moellendorf verfochtenen Historismus) und setzte sich energisch für die Hebung des gymnasialen Lehrerstandes sowohl hinsichtlich dessen wissenschaftlicher Weiterbildung wie materieller Gleichstellung mit den Richtern ein. Seit 1909 war A. Vorsitzender des Gymnasialvereins in der Nachfolge von O. Jäger.
