    N. legte Ostern 1934 am Gymnasium Breslau die Reifeprüfung mit Auszeichnung ab; die Hochschulreife wurde ihm aber wegen der NS-Rassengesetze verweigert, was seinen Vater darin bestärkte, eine Professur in Sibirien anzunehmen. N. studierte 1935-37 an der Univ. Tomsk Mathematik und versuchte nach der Verhaftung des Vaters in die USA auszuwandern. Mit Hilfe von Verwandten gelangte er 1938 nach Schweden und von dort 1939 in die USA. 1939-40 setzte er sein Studium an der Ohio State University fort (1940 B.A.), 1940/41 an der University of Illinois (1941 M.A. in Mathematik). 1941-45 diente N. in der US-Army, aus der er als Oberleutnant ausschied. 1946-49 absolvierte er ein Promotionsstudium an der Columbia University (1949 Ph. D. in Math. Statistik). Anschließend lehrte er an der New York University, insbesondere dem dort angesiedelten Courant Institute. 1951 wurde er an die Boston University berufen, der er bis 1968 angehörte ( 1951 Assistant Professor, 1955 Associate Professor, 1958 Full Professor für Mathematische Statistik). Mit Unterstützung des Fulbright-Programms war er 1957/58 Gastprofessor an der Univ. Tübingen, 1965/66 an der Univ. Wien. 1968 wurde er Professor und Vorstand des Department of Statistics der University of Connecticut in Storrs.

    N. lieferte wichtige Beiträge zur nichtparametrischen Statistik. In mehr als 50 Einzelpublikationen und Büchern präzisierte er|den Begriff der relativen Effizienz und entwickelte vorausgreifende Ideen zur explanatorischen Datenanalyse und Robustheit. Weitere bedeutende Arbeiten beschäftigen sich mit dem Zusammenhang zwischen Konfidenz- und Toleranzintervallen. Sein 1967 erschienenes Lehrbuch „Elements of Nonparametric Statistics“ ist nach wie vor ein unentbehrliches Nachschlagewerk. Besonders verdient machte sich N. um die akademische Lehre der Statistik. In seiner „Introduction to Statistics: A Fresh Approach“ (1971, ²1991) wird gezeigt, wie nichtparametrische Überlegungen genutzt werden können, um Studenten auf einem mathematisch elementaren Niveau in die Ideenwelt der Statistik einzuführen. N. war außerdem bemüht, die Statistik als Unterrichtsfach an Höheren Schulen zu etablieren.|
