  • Biographical Presentation

    B. studierte bis 1899 in Göttingen und Rostock und ließ sich als Schüler Karl Garrès und Ernst von Bergmanns 1905 als Chirurg in Rostock nieder. Nach Verlust des rechten Armes infolge septischer Infektion bei einer Kriegsoperation 1918 stellte er sich ganz auf die Geschichte der Medizin um, arbeitete unter Karl Sudhoff in Leipzig, habilitierte sich 1919 in Rostock, wurde dort 1924 außerordentlicher Professor und 1934 Ordinarius für Medizingeschichte und Direktor an dem 1938 auf seine Initiative hin so genannten „Karl-Sudhoff-Institut für Geschichte der Medizin und der Naturwissenschaften“. Als Medizinhistoriker erwies er sich schon in seiner Habilitationsschrift|„Die Stellung des Guy de Chauliac in der Chirurgie des Mittelalters“ als einer der gründlichsten Kenner der Chirurgiegeschichte. Zum Standardwerk wurde seine 1928 erschienene „Kurze Geschichte der Chirurgie“. B. gehörte vielen wissenschaftlichen Gesellschaften an. Seit 1935 war er Mitglied, 1947 bis 51 Vizepräsident der Leopoldina in Halle.
