  • Biographical Presentation

    A. studierte Theologie und Germanistik sowie alt- und neuhehräische Philologie als Schüler von Paul de Lagarde. Die Heidelberger Universität verlieh ihm den Dr. theol. h. c. 1896-1924 war er Lehrer an der Oberrealschule in Oldenburg. Als einer der ersten Lehrer behandelte er auch die neuere deutsche Literatur im Unterricht; er verfaßte den besten Reiseführer durch Rügen und eine Rügensche Literatur-Geschichte. Als Orientalist beschäftigte er sich gründlich mit späthebräischen Literaturwerken und ihrer Sprache; er schrieb über spanisch-jüdische Dichter (1905), verfaßte eine neuhebräische Grammatik (1913) und gab von 1913-22 die Texte der Mischna heraus, jener|Sammlung jüdischer Religionsgesetze, die dem Talmud als Grundlage dienten.
