  • Biographical Presentation

    A. war von 1748 bis Mai 1766 Rektor des Frankfurter Gymnasiums. Seine pädagogischen Grundsätze waren besonders auf die freie Entwicklung des Charakters und der individuellen Geistesgaben gerichtet und berührten sich vielfach mit denen von Rousseau. Er war u. a. der Lehrer des späteren neutestamentlichen Textkritikers →Johann Jakob Griesbach; ferner unterwies er im Hebräischen und in der alt-testamentlichen Kultur den jungen Goethe, mit dessen Vater er befreundet war. In „Dichtung und Wahrheit“ (I. Teil, 4. Buch) hielt Goethe charakteristische Züge dieser eigenartig fesselnden Lehrerpersönlichkeit fest.
