    Die Bredt sind ein bedeutendes Barmer Kaufmanns- und Fabrikantengeschlecht. Johann Viktor s. (1), Julius s. (2) und August s. (4) sind Nachkommen von Friedrich-Wilhelm (1781–1839), Spinnereibesitzer und Bankier in Neuß und Teilhaber der Rohseidenhandlung Werninghaus & Bredt in Barmen, während Rudolf s. (3) einer anderen Linie angehört. Der Kunsthistoriker Wilhelm (1869–1938) machte sich durch seine Arbeiten über Buchschmuck und deutsche Malerei einen Namen.
