  • Biographical Presentation

    B. besuchte das Gymnasium in Reval, studierte Theologie und Geschichte in Dorpat (1866–70), Göttingen (1874/75) und Bonn (1877/78), war seit 1871 zwischendurch Propsteiadjunkt und Vikar in Norka. 1878 erwarb er mit einer Abhandlung „Die Schriften Tertullians, nach der Zeit ihrer Abfassung untersucht“ den magister theol. in Dorpat und habilitierte sich gleichzeitig. 1881 D. theol., wurde er 1882 Professor für Kirchengeschichte in Dorpat und war seit 1891 ordentlicher Professor in Göttingen. Sein Hauptarbeitsgebiet war die Dogmengeschichte der Alten Kirche (neben A. von Harnack, F. Loofs, R. Seeberg). Er machte sich besonders verdient um die kritische Edition und Kommentierung der Werke des Methodius von Olympos, des Hippolyt und altchristlicher Einzelschriften.
