    B. arbeitete bis 1900 als Assistent bei W. Semmler in Greifswald, dann bei O. Wallach in Göttingen. 1905 wurde er ordentlicher Professor und Direktor des Chemischen Laboratoriums der Bergakademie Clausthal und wirkte seit 1921 an der Technischen Hochschule Hannover. In Göttingen kam B. in Berührung mit der um die Wende des 19. zum 20. Jahrhunderts neu aufstrebenden anorganischen Chemie und wurde nach Lehrzeiten in Freiberg (bei C. Winkler) und in Washington (W. F. Hillebrand) auf diesem Gebiet führend. Mit seinen Untersuchungen über „Systematische Verwandtschaftslehre“ (in: Zeitschrift für anorganische und allgemeine Chemie, 1922–30), „Raumchemie der festen Stoffe“ (1934) und „Intermetallische Verbindungen“ sowie zahlreichen Veröffentlichungen aus anderen Gebieten hat B. der anorganisch-chemischen Forschung starke Impulse gegeben. - Er war Dr.-Ing. e. h. der Technischen Hochschule Stuttgart, Dr. rer. techn. e. h. der Deutschen Technischen Hochschule Prag und Mitglied der Akademien Göttingen und Halle.
