    Die Familie geht auf Cornelius von Berchem zurück, der zuerst 1458 in Köln erscheint und 1491 Vorsteher der Goldschmiedezunft war und dessen Enkel Ratsherr wurde. Sie stammt vermutlich aus den Niederlanden, doch ist ein Zusammenhang mit dem Maler →Claes (Nikolaes) Berchem (1620–83) nicht feststellbar. Sie gehörte später zum Patriziat, bis sie mit dem kurbayerischen Geheimen Konferenzrat Anton von Berchem (seit 1683 Freiherr, 1632–1700, Gvv von Maximilian, s. 3) nach Bayern kam und dort Grundbesitz erwarb.
