  • Biographical Presentation

    B. besuchte die Universität in Wien, wo er bei Jos. Stefan, Fel. Exner und später bei Ludw. Boltzmann hörte. Als Exners Assistent prüfte er 1899 dessen Theorie von der Entstehung des luftelektrischen Feldes durch Messungen in der extrem trockenen Atmosphäre des winterlichen Sibirien und mußte sie ablehnen. Von da ab hat er durch eigene Arbeiten und Kritik aller anderen Theorien und Versuche der weiteren Forschung den Weg gewiesen. Sein zweites Arbeitsgebiet war die Seismik. Auch hier kam er vom Versuch seit 1906 zur Theorie. Der „B.sche Satz“ ermöglicht es, aus Messungen an der Erdoberfläche auf Raumgeschwindigkeit und Richtung der Wellen für jeden Punkt der Strahlbahn in der Tiefe zu schließen und so größere Abnormalitäten im Untergrund zu erkennen (wichtig für Geologie, Ozeanographie etc.). - 1904-36 war er ordentlicher Professor der Physik an der Universität Graz.
