  • Biographical Presentation

    H. studierte 1865-68 in Halle Theologie. Neben den beiden theologischen Prüfungen (1872 und 1876 in Stettin) bestand er 1873 noch die Prüfung als Lehrer an Mittel- und Höheren Mädchenschulen. Anfänglich Lehrer an der Mittelschule in Havelberg und einer Privatschule in Berlin, wurde er 1878 Hilfsprediger an der Sankt Jakobigemeinde in Berlin sowie Hausgeistlicher am Diakonissenhaus Paul-Gerhardt-Stift. 1879 wurde er zum Pfarrer und Direktor des Oberlinhauses in Nowawes bei Potsdam berufen. Unter H. wurde es zu einem großen Diakonissenmutter- und Krankenhaus ausgebaut. 1894 gliederte ihm H. ein Krüppelheim an. Mit der Zusammenfassung von Klinik, Schule, Lehrwerkstätten und seelsorgerlicher Betreuung wurde er der Bahnbrecher der deutschen Krüppelfürsorge. 1912 errichtete er das erste deutsche Heim für Taubstummenblinde. 1928 schied er aus seinen Ämtern. – 1914-28 war H. Vorsitzender der Kaiserswerther Generalkonferenz, seit 1915 auch des Kaiserswerthers Verbandes deutscher Diakonissen-Mutterhäuser. – doctor theologiae u. doctor medicinae honoris causa (Berlin).
