Biographical Presentation
Hommel: Johann H. (eigentlich Hummel, lateinisch Homelius), wurde am 2. Februar 1518 in Memmingen in Schwaben geboren und starb am 5. Juli (nach Doppelmayr am 3. Juli) 1562 in Leipzig. Durch seinen großen Fleiß gelangte er bei Kaiser Karl V. und dem Kurfürsten August von Sachsen zu so hohem Ansehen, daß er beide Regenten in der Mathematik unterrichtete. Er wurde darauf neben Joachim Rhaeticus ordentlicher Professor der Mathematik an der Universität in Leipzig und wird besonders von Tycho Brahe gerühmt. Tycho lernte von ihm das Verfahren, kleine Theile einer Linie durch Transversalen anzugeben und entlehnte aus seinen Beobachtungen die Polhöhe von Leipzig zu 51° 17'. Von seinem Schüler Scultetus lernte Tycho die Grundlagen der Astronomie. Er gab keine Schriften heraus, hinterließ aber verschiedene Manuscripte, von welchen eins über Gnomonik sich in dem Nachlaß von Praetorius befindet.
