  • Biographical Presentation

    A. studierte in Leiden als Schüler seines Vaters, Hermann Boerhaaves und Raus, sowie in Paris Anatomie und Chirurgie. Schon mit 21 Jahren wurde er außerordentlicher Professor für Anatomie und Chirurgie in Leiden; nach dem Tode seines Vaters übernahm er dessen Lehrstuhl (1721) für Anatomie und Therapie. Er war der bedeutendste Vertreter der beschreibenden Anatomie seiner Zeit und verdient den Namen eines Reformators dieser Wissenschaft. Seine hervorragendsten Arbeiten (De ossibus corporis humani, 1726; Historia musculorum hominis, 1734) galten Generationen als maßgebend und wurden erst im 19. Jahrhundert von der Forschung überholt. Auch gab A. die berühmten „Tabulae anatomicae sceletti et musculorum corporis humani“ (1747), gezeichnet und gestochen von Jan Wandeler, heraus, die sein Bruder Friedrich Bernhard A. mit seinem anatomischen Handbuch (De natura hominis libellus, 1775) kommentierte.
