  • Biographical Presentation

    H. trat 1709 in den Jesuitenorden ein, absolvierte seine Studien in Rom und ging 1724 als Missionar nach Chile. Zuerst dozierte er in Santiago Theologie und übernahm dann die wirtschaftliche Verwaltung der Mission, die er durch Einrichtung und Ausbau von Plantagen wirtschaftlich unabhängig von Europa machte. H. weilte 1740-48 als Vertreter seiner Mission in Europa und kehrte mit einer Gruppe von ungefähr 40 Laienbrüdern, darunter vielen Deutschen, nach Chile zurück, mit deren Hilfe er europäisches Handwerk und Gewerbe einführte (unter anderem Uhrenmacherei, Glockengießerei, Weberei, Glasherstellung, Kunstschreinerei und so weiter) und die Grundlage zu einer wirtschaftlichen Blüte legte. 1750-56 und 1761-63 leitete H. als Rektor das Zentralkolleg von Santiago. Briefe von ihm wurden im „Weltbott“ Nummer 230 (1727), 438 (1732) und 776 (1761) herausgegeben.
