  • Biographical Presentation

    G. verlor im Alter von 4 Jahren seinen Vater; die Mutter, die das Geschäft übernahm, sorgte aber für eine ausgezeichnete Erziehung, zuerst auf der Nikolaischule in Leipzig, dann auf dem Gymnasium in Halle. Anschließend studierte er in Jena und Leipzig die Rechte und legte in Leipzig das 1. Rechtsexamen ab. Seine ursprüngliche Absicht, den Doktor beider Rechte zu erwerben, änderte G., nachdem er 1664 zum Ratsherrn in Leipzig gewählt worden war. In noch stärkerem Maße als sein Vater betätigte er sich in der Stadtverwaltung, wurde schon 1665 Stadthauptmann des Halleschen Viertels, 1668 Deputierter auf der Stadtwaage und 1681 Stadtbaumeister, außerdem 1683 Deputierter zur Schoßstube. Die Leitung der altberühmten ererbten Buchhandlung übernahm er nach der Mutter Tode 1661 und führte sie trotz seiner vielen anderen Geschäfte erfolgreich weiter. Gemeinsam mit Johann Friedrich Gleditsch hat er 1682-91 die ersten Jahrgänge der „Acta Eruditorum“, der ersten gelehrten Zeitschrift Deutschlands, die Otto Mencke herausgab, verlegt.
